Mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money! That’s what Odell Beckham Jr. must be thinking after signing the most lucrative shoe deal in NFL history.
Nice Kicks’ Nick DePaula was the first to report the news that the New York Giants star wide receiver signed a five-year contract with shoe giant Nike. Sources with inside information mentioned the deal is worth approximately $5 million a year, which is the largest shoe deal ever for any NFL player. There also are incentives on the table that will allow the deal to stretch to eight years and $48 million.
Beckham Jr.’s original deal with Nike ended May 1st, and once the terms closed, Nike’s rival sneaker giant, Adidas, decided they were going to make him an offer. Nik
e was able
to match Adidas’ offer to keep the Giants’ superstar on their athlete roster. Nike brand personnel mentioned even though Beckham Jr. wasn’t adamant about making a signature cleat, he vehemently pointed out he wanted to be a brand icon for Nike.
Throughout his first three years of his NFL career, Beckham Jr. has put up numbers worthy of a major shoe deal. OBJ’s otherworldly catches, amazing speed, and over the top cleats is what makes him one of the most polarizing figures in the NFL. He’s started every game except for one, he’s been very close to over 100 receptions each year, gained more than 1,300 receiving yards each season, averages over 13 yards a catch, has 10 or more receiving touchdowns every year, and oh yeah, he’s made the Pro Bowl every single year. How’s that for earning a staggering deal with one of the leading shoe companies in the world.
Beckham Jr. is already set to make around $3.3 million for the 2017 season, which includes his base salary of about $1.8 million off of a 4 yr / $10.4 million contract with the New York Giants, plus nearly $1.5 million from his signing bonus of nearly $5.9 million.
Regardless of some of his on the field and off the field antics, one thing you can’t say about this man is that he hasn’t earned what money is coming his way. I for one am looking forward to seeing what he does on the field this season for my Giants.
