Social media can sometimes be a great thing to connect with old distance friends and to voice an idea or opinion. However, social media can also not be beneficial. In this case, NFL running back Adrian Peterson’s recent twitter rant is seemed to be falling on deaf ears. In a series of tweets yesterday, Peterson wanted teams to honor players’ contracts, and he also vented about NFL players not having guaranteed contracts that players in other sports receive such as in the NBA and MLB. Take a look at Peterson’s twitter rant after the break.

In his tweets, Peterson feels NFL teams have all of the leverage when it comes to players and their contracts. He believes players should have more protection by having guaranteed contracts.  The other day, Peterson released a statement to ESPN that alludes to him missing the Minnesota Vikings’ team activities because he wanted to make sure his future was taken care of. He also hinted at the idea of implementing guaranteed money into his contract because there were currently no portions left of his contract that included guaranteed money.

Peterson’s current contract runs through 2017, and is scheduled to pay him $12.75 million this season. He would make $15 million in 2016 and $16 million in 2017, including $250,000 workout bonuses each season. If the Vikings were to release him, they would incur no penalties for letting him go.

The Vikings have noted they would not be trading Peterson, and they stood firm in mentioning they didn’t ask Peterson to take a pay cut, and they want to mend their relationship with him, and move forward.

Here’s my take on this particular story. In regards to Adrian Peterson’s thoughts about teams having all of the leverage when it comes to honoring player’s contracts, and the NFL not having any guaranteed contracts like the NBA and MLB, I do agree with him. Out of the major sports, I believe the NFL should definitely have guaranteed contracts because the players and their bodies take the most punishment, and they could easily have a career ending injury after just one play more so than the other sports. Teams can release players without paying out the rest of the contract terms, and the players are then told it’s about business, and will have to deal with not receiving any more money from their once lucrative contract. With that, he’s correct.

However, in the aftermath of his 2014 NFL season, I’m going to need Adrian Peterson to understand a few things. He was the one who signed his new contract with the Minnesota Vikings after the collective bargaining agreement was agreed upon in 2011, so he knew what he was getting himself into. Also at that time, he did receive guaranteed money in the amount of about $20.3 million. He could’ve spread the guaranteed money throughout the term of his contract where he would receive money every year of his contract, but he chose to take all of the guaranteed money up front, which would leave him in the situation he is in now with no guaranteed money left on his contract. The Vikings paid him for this past season even though he only played in one game, and was put on Commissioner Roger Goodell’s exempt list because of his child abuse case, which you can read about here.

I know he means well, but this is definitely not his finest hour and he definitely comes across as being angry, bitter, and childish with the tweets. It’s hard to feel bad for this situation when he definitely was the one who had a big hand in creating it. But, that’s just me. Tighten up some AP, get ready for this season, and make this season your best so you can earn your money on your contract, and have people forget about your tumultuous season last year.

  1. Stop beating a 4 y/o baby like he’s a 40 y/o man. When you guarantee that then we can talk about guaranteeing you a contract.
